Fires can happen in any workplace, at any time. Because fire can not only damage property, but also endanger lives, proper fire safety training is vital. If you have employees, you are required to provide fire safety training for them.

What do our fire safety courses cover?

Depending on what you require of your employees, FMC offers two levels of Fire Safety Training.

Level 1 Award in the Principles of Fire Safety Awareness

The objective of this qualification is to support learners in any workplace, particularly new starters, where a basic understanding of fire safety is required.

Learners gaining this qualification will know that fire safety is the responsibility of everyone in the workplace. They will recognise the common causes of fire and identify actions to take in the event of a fire.

Entry requirements

There are no prerequisites for this qualification, although it is recommended that learners have a minimum of Level 1 in literacy/English or equivalent.

Assessment method: Multiple-choice examination

Guided learning hours (GLH): 4

To complete the L1 Award in the Principles of Fire Safety Awareness (RQF), learners must complete the following mandatory unit:

Unit 1: Principles of Fire Safety Awareness

This qualification is approved for delivery to learners aged 14+.

Topics covered in training include:

  • Understand the hazards and risks associated with fire in the workplace
  • Understand how fire risk is controlled in the workplace
  • Main causes or fires
  • How to reduce the likelihood of fires starting

Daily checks could include:

  • Actions to take in the event of a fire - raise the alarm, evacuate, contact emergency services, fight a fire if able, assembly point

Progression opportunities

Learners can progress onto Level 2 Award in Fire Safety.

Level 2 Award in the Principles of Fire Safety

This qualification is aimed at anyone involved in the management of fire safety who are based in any area where there is a potential risk of fire.

Learners gaining this qualification will know that fire safety is the responsibility of everyone and will recognise the causes of fire as well as knowing common hazards, the steps in a fire risk assessment and how to reduce the likelihood of fires.

The objective of the qualification is predominantly to support a role in the workplace, however may also be suitable for younger learners preparing for employment or wishing to progress onto further learning in a related subject.

Entry requirements

To register for this qualification, learners are required to be 14 years of age or above. It is also recommended that learners have a minimum of level 1 in English or equivalent.

Assessment method: Multiple-choice examination

Guided learning hours (GLH): 6

Unit 1: Principles of Fire Safety

Topics covered in training include:

  • Understand the hazards and risks associated with fire in the workplace
  • Understand how fire risk is controlled in the workplace
  • Causes - Arson, electrical etc.
  • Components - 3 elements, what each do and how to extinguish by removing
  • Hazards - Fire - burning, further fires, structural weakness. Smoke - inhalation, visual, smoke damage, smoke carrying potential ignition
  • Fire Spread - Radiation, convection, conduction direct burning
  • Fire risk assessment - Refer to the 5 Steps to Fire Risk Assessment
  • Reduce the likelihood - Complete, review and update fire risk assessments. Good housekeeping, fire detection, employee training
  • Elements - Signage, route, refuge, assembly point
  • Types - Portable – water, Co2 etc. Fixed – sprinklers, risers, etc.
  • Duties - Providing a fire risk assessment, good housekeeping, emergency procedures in place, regular training, drills etc. fire safety inspections

Delegates that complete the course can then assume the role of fire warden in the workplace.

Progression opportunities

On successful completion of this qualification, learners may wish to continue their development by undertaking one of the following qualifications:

  • Level 2 Award in Risk Assessment (RQF)
  • Level 2 Award Health and Safety within the Workplace (RQF)
  • Level 3 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace (RQF)
